Backpacker Magazine has picked the Saivo as the top choice in the Mountaineering category in their recently released  2012 Gear Guide.

Their motivation reads: "It's as sturdy as much heavier expedition tents," raved one tester after hunkering down in the Saivo through snowstorms at 10,000 feet in Colorado's Park Range. The weight savings come primarily from Kerlon 1800 fabric, a high quality nylon that's coated with three layers of silicone for consistent strength (ultralight silnylons sometimes use one or two layers, which can leave gaps or weak spots). Result: Kerlon is stronger than typical winter-tent fabrics, but also lighter (and yes, more expensive). The freestanding geometry also achieves impressive strength: Seven pole crossings make the Saivo rigid enough to withstand crushing wind and snow loads. "It stayed blissfully quiet through 40-mph gusts," says our tester. Ventilation is outstanding, thanks to closeable vents on the vestibules and the crown of the tent. And dimensions are generous: The 46-inch peak height and 91-inch length lets tall campers (up to 6'6") sit and sprawl. Two 14-square-foot vestibules offer lavish storage space - enough for winter gear with room to spare for cooking. The integrated fly and body speeds pitching and keeps the interior dry during foul-weather setup. Interior storage also earned props, since 12 pockets enabled three campers to locate headlamps and snacks quickly. Downside? It's a big investment."

A big congratulations to Sebastian Copeland and Eric McNair-Landry on reaching their first goal of their expedition. Here is Sebastian's update:

"It took the time, but I am pleased to report that tonight, at 19:30 GST, Eric and I reached the Antarctica Pole of Inaccessibility! This marks a first in the history of polar exploration: until today, no team had succeeded in reaching the POI without assistance or motorized transportation. The farthest point from any coast, the POI is effectively the heart of Antarctica, and regarded as the most difficult spot to reach in complete autonomy. A bust of Lenin, and a communications tower is all that remains of the Soviet era base which has been buried by drifting snow since it was abandoned almost fifty years ago. And now our red tent brings life back to the ghostly set!"

Historically known for making lightweight all-season tents of the highest quality, we are breaking out of the mold for 2012 with the introduction of our first ever 3 season tents geared for users who don’t need all season function but still demand both great strength and light weight. The new Anjan 2 and 3 tunnel tents are based on the proven Nallo design, while the new Rogen dome tent is inspired by the popular Allak.

“There’s definitely a demand for lighter weight tents that still provide protection in unpredictable weather in the warmer months, and we’re excited to be offering an excellent solution for our customers,” says Petra Hilleberg, President of Hilleberg the Tentmaker, USA. “Our new 3 season tents are not mere ‘summer tents.’ They are designed just like all Hilleberg tents, but use the new Kerlon 1000 outer tent fabric which is a lighter weight than the Kerlon 1200 and 1800 fabric we have been using in our all-season tents for quite some time now.”

The Anjan and Rogen are built with 9 mm poles and Kerlon 1000 outer tent fabric, which boasts a robust 10 kg tear strength, so they can handle the unpredictable and often tempestuous weather of northern Scandinavia’s snow-free months – a period where conditions can change from warm sunshine to alarmingly cold, windy and rainy in an instant. At the same time, both models are wonderfully light: the Anjan 2 and 3 tunnel tents are about 25 percent lighter than their Nallo all season cousins, with minimum weights of 1.7 kg and 1.9 kg respectively. The Rogen has a minimum weight of 2.0 kg, roughly 35 percent lighter than its all season counterpart, the Allak. As with Hilleberg’s all season models, the Rogen and Anjan have poles on their outer tents to maximize structural strength, and their linked inner and outer tents allow for quick and easy simultaneous pitching or separate use.

On the 2 - 7 of August 40 journalists from 25 countries, 40 mountain guides and approx 300 end consumers got together at the Jungfraujoch on Switzerland to participate in the kick off of Mammuts 150 year anniversary celebration. In collaboration with Mammut, Hilleberg pitched 150 Saivos, 4 Atlas and a number of other models. The result was an amazing event and together we built the worlds largest basecamp and had a brilliant start of the upcoming anniversary year. Besides ascents of the Jungfrau and Mönch, there was a big photoshoot for Mammuts FW12 campaign, workshops with Mammut Alpine School and of course a whole lot of raclette."

Here is a video of the event;

The largest Basecamp in the World!

The Swiss outdoor and mountain sports brand Mammut is celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2012 on 150 of the most beautiful peaks in the world. The Mammut Anniversary Basecamp, which marks the exclusive opening event of the Anniversary Celebration, is being held in the heart of Switzerland and surrounded by the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau mountains on the Jungfraujoch, one of the most spectacular destinations in the world.

The Mammut Anniversary Basecamp will become the largest basecamp in the world, with at least 150 red Hilleberg Saivo expedition tents, and  40 mountain guides from different countries gathered together to witness the launch of the planned 150 ascents.

To celebrate this special event, Hilleberg has created 150 Red Special Edition Mammut Saivos. These tents will be used at the Mammut Anniversary Basecamp on the Jungfraujoch at 3471 meters between August 2nd and 7th, 2011.

The July issue of Field & Stream features a Buyers Guide for Backpack Fishing. In their "Splurge" section they pick the Kaitum 2 GT, saying; "Weighing only 6 1/2 pounds, and roomy enough for two anglers and a ton of gear - including the extended vestibule, it's 171x40x55 inches - the Kaitum 2 GT is made of ultralight, supertough ripstop nylon. With four poles, four pegs and guylines, it took only eight minutes to set up."

In this latest issue you will also find "Camping Essentials" where you can read the following about the Staika: "Your tent is your castle on the water trail, and the Hilleberg Staika is the free-standing equivalent of the Windsor, only lighter at a hair over 7 pounds. This simple and solid dome tent is Scandinavian built with a single wall of Kerlon 1800, pitching in tight conditions without sacrificing roominess or gale-force stability."

Climbing Magazine just released their annual Gear Guide. In it they feature the New Saitaris. This is what they thought about it:

"Before you start gagging at the price, look at this four-person tent's impressive qualities. The freestanding double-walled shelter feels like the Four Seasons when you're at advanced base camp and the wind is blowing madly, thenks to the Kerlon 1800 fabric (said to be six times stronger than most mountaineering tent fabrics). The 53-square-foot interior and 49-inch apex deliver sufficient space for a quartet, and the four-pole set-up makes for easy pitching. A 30-square-foot vestibule provides space for both climbing gear and cooking, and another 15 square-foot space is accessible via the rear of the tent. Testers had no problems with ventilation due to the Saitari's two vents on the fly and two on the roof. Another Plus: There are multiple side doors for easy entry. At 12 lbs 2 oz, this tent is not likely to be carried on summit bids, but it's great for winter camping or low camps on a big peak."

Backpacker Magazine in the US picked the New Saitaris as the best mountainerring tent in their recent Gear Guide. They had this to say about our new 4 person tent:

"When a tent costs as much as a mortage payment, it better deliver homelike comforts. The four-person Saitaris does just that, providing fortress protection and castle space in punishing winter conditions. Its Kerlon 1800 fabric is six times stronger than typical mountaineering-tent materials. Perched on an exposed, 12000-foot summit in Colorado's Park Range, "it barely shuddered in 30-mph gusts," reports our tester. The freestanding double-wall dome pitches with four poles of equal length (plus a shorter fifth pole supporting the front vestibule), making setup easy, even in the dark, with wind howling. The 49 inch peak height and 53-square-foot interior provide ample room for four sleepers; the 30-square-foot front vestibule easily holds four campers' worth of winter gear with plenty or romm left over for cooking, and the 15-square-foot rear area offers a garage for overflow. Multiple entry options also earned props: Place the vestibule's arched door on the leeward side, and it prevents icy blasts from sweeping through the vestibule and into the tent; but when winds shifted, testers entered the vestibule via another door on the opposite side. Ventilation is superb, thanks to two structured vents on the fly and two huge roof vents that can be unzipped in any weather. With four occupants - at 20°F with snowfall and 87 percent ambient humidity - no condensation accumulated inside."

Here is a link to our new Saitaris on our site. We are hoping to have it available in late April. You can pre-order it now and we will ship it as soon as it comes in.

Germany's Outdoor  magazine recently awarded their prestigeous "Editors Choice 2011: The Top Products of the Year." This year the Soulo received the top nod by the selection committee.
Their motivation  read: "There are solo-tents on the market that are lighter than Hilleberg’s 2.1kg Soulo. But none are more stable or more comfortable. Not only does the Soulo stand up solidly to winds of 100 km/hr, it also dependably keeps out rain, and ground moisture. It is child’s play to erect, even with numb fingers while in the middle of a storm. In addition, it is fully winter-ready and completely free standing, without pegs – very practical on flat rock, which by the way does not challenge the strong floor material in the slightest. The interior space is easily roomy enough for one person, who can enjoy nearly 1 meter sitting height and a usable sleeping-length of 1.90 meters. The vestibule is also roomy – it can be used for cooking, and it also swallows boots, backpack and wet rain gear without problems."

A number of our professional partners are starting their expeditions right now. Visit their web-sites for some amazing adventures.

Ben Saunders, today announced his second attempt to become the fastest person ever to reach the geographic North Pole. Only two people in history have reached the North Pole solo and unsupported, the most recent being eight years ago.

Ben’s attempt was cut short in 2010 due to equipment failure, when a faulty fuel container leaked, contaminating his food and supplies meaning he was unable to finish the expedition. Like the first attempt, Ben will undertake this expedition alone, on foot, without air-drops of food, and with the aim of setting a speed record.

Catlin Arctic Survey.  On this third Catlin Arctic Survey, scientists and explorers are examining the surface layers of the Arctic Ocean. They are researching how changes within the seawater beneath the floating sea ice may be affecting powerful ocean currents that influence prevailing climate and weather patterns worldwide.

In parallel, scientists from the US, UK and Canada are conducting experiments at a unique research station on the frozen Arctic Ocean with the support of experienced polar explorers and guides.
