Freya Made it!!  Hilleberg supported Freya Hoffmeister finished her circumnavigation of Australia around noon, Tuesday, December 15, 2009. She landed at the Queenscliff beach at the mouth of Melbourne Harbor 332 days after departing from that same spot on January 18th.  She covered approximately 8,470 miles (13,800 km) in 245 days of paddling, averaging nearly 35 miles (65 km) per day. In spite of numerous attempts, the circumnavigation of Australia has been completed only once previously, in 1982 by Paul Caffyn in 361 days. Freya saved time and distance by taking a bold “short-cut” across the Gulf of Carpentaria, a 350- mile (575-km) open-water passage that took eight days and seven nights on the water. The German Magazine Outdoor has just awarded their Gear of the Year 2009 in the "trekking tent" category to the Kaitum GT. The winners are chosen through voting by the readers of the magazine. A Hilleberg tent has won at least one of the categories every year since 2000. We are very excited and honored by this.

Austria's biggest Outdoor magazine; Land der Berge, featured a big test of lightweight tents in their August issue and the Allak won the "top tip"  which is their first place award.

In the Summer issue of Overland Journal the Staika can be seen in their Long Term Field Test, which reports on gear after 12 months of "overlanding." Tester Jonathan Hanson starts out by saying "My attempts to find fault with the Hilleberg Staika were reduced to feeble whingeing about tiny hooks that hold open the interior door. Unfortunately, the succeeding year has done little to sharpen my abilities as a critic. There's just not much bad to say about this tent. Not only that, I recently received the two-person Staika's smaller, one person fraternal twin, the sub-five-pound Soulo, which on first examination appears to perform just as brilliantly as a solo motor-cycling shelter." He finishes his review by stating; "For two-person motorcycle touring or minimalist vehicle camping, the Staika offers the peace of mind of knowing that, no matter what the weather, you have a dry, secure haven just a five-minute pitch away."

03/20/2009

The leading German outdoor publication Outdoor has once again given their Editor's Choice Award to a Hilleberg tent. Last year it went to the Allak and for Summer 2009 it goes to the Soulo.

The Backpacker Magazine Gear Guide is out. They feature a Kaitum 3 GT stating: "Kaitum 3 GT - Big and Versatile. Let's be clear: As a three person $900 winter shelter, this tent is in a class by itself. Here's why it's worth the dough. The Kaitum is designed for quick pitching in harsh weather climates - the body stays clipped to the fly, so the interior is never exposed to the elements. The double-wall shelter is remarkably light for the space because it's a hoop-style tent (not freestanding); the low weight, plus excellent ventilation, make it more suitable year-round than standard winter tents. The 44 square-foot interior easily accommodates three sleepers, and two enormous vestibules add another 45 square feet of shelter. "You could practically fit a porch swing in the front vestibule," said one tester after sitting out an afternoon shower under its generous canopy. Bonus: In rainfly-only mode (4 lbs. 10 oz.) during a Utah desert trip, we slept six testers inside. Bummer: The massive footprint makes site selection difficult in some terrain. $895. 7 lbs 4 oz"

The April issue of "Men's Health" features an Allak with the comments: "A storm worthy tent not only keeps you dry during a downpour; it's comfy enough for you to while away a rainy day inside. The 5.5 lbs two-person Allak meets both demands, protecting gear in two roomy vestibules while shrugging off a storm that dumped eight inches of rain and snow on us one night in Washington's Olympic National Park."

Our Kaitum 3 GT models are now also here and ready for shipping.

The Allak is given Field & Stream Magazine’s 2008 Best of the Best Award in the hunting miscellaneous category. It is featured in the September 2008 issue, currently out on newsstands.

The Best of the Best judging criteria include the significance of the innovation, the quality of design, and the value it brings to hunters. Criteria varied, depending upon the category, but all winning products shared one quality: excellence in their field.

“The Allak faced stiff competition in its category, but the judges ultimately decided that it was the most innovative and best-designed product in its class,” said Jay Cassell, Deputy Editor for Field and Stream. “Having the right gear is a huge part of hunting, and the Field and Stream Best of the Best Awards are our way of vetting and recognizing the best stuff out there.”

The Staika receives the "Editor's Choice" in Overland Journal.

Featured in the summer 2008 issue, a total of six exceptional products were selected for testing in the magazine’s review of lightweight tents for motorcycle or 4WD camping. Each tent had to meet a set of demanding criteria and was put through extensive and rigorous testing.

Overland Journal editor Jonathan Hanson’s criteria for testing the tents was simple, yet intense. Does it protect against precipitation? Does it resist wind? Is it easy to use? And is it suitable for living?

“Your tent is your single most important piece of camping equipment. When bad weather hits, the tent is all that stands between you and a miserable night,” said Jonathan. “The Hilleberg Staika earned the Editor’s Choice because of its quality, layout, convenience, resistance to abuse, and multi-directional wind stability. It is worth every penny of its premium price, and will provide a safe and comfortable haven for years of adventures.”

Strong, Light and Roomy: Three New Tents for 2008

It’s hard to believe that 2007 is almost over! But that does mean it’s time to unveil our new 2008 models, the Kaitum 3, the Allak, and the Soulo, three exciting Ultralight tents we’ve been testing and working on for some years.

The new three-person Kaitum is, of course, modeled after its two-person sibling, which we introduced in 2006. Ideal for trips where weight to space to strength ratio is a top priority, the Kaitum 3 is palatial: Two ample vestibules and a prodigious 42 ft² interior can take three 6+ foot travelers and their gear with ease, while two large entrances provide unrestricted access. At the same time, this tough Tunnel tent has a minimum weight just shy of 6 pounds, making it an excellent go-to tent for all backcountry excursions.

Kaitum 3

Our new, two-person, fully free standing Dome tent, the Allak traces its roots to our very popular Staika. Boasting two entrances and two fully integrated vestibules, the Allak has room aplenty for two 6+ foot adventurers and their gear, and its 3-pole configuration ensures no lack of strength for harsh conditions. The Allak’s design also affords tremendous venting options for more temperate adventures, not to mention a sub-6 pound minimum weight, making the Allak an outstanding all-around tent.

Allak

Finally, the new Soulo is the latest addition to our solo tent group. A fully free standing model – it’s roomy vestibule is completely integrated – the Soulo is ideal for the extremely demanding trips, yet light enough for all but the most gram-dependant journeys. It offers over 21 ft² of interior roominess, is expedition-ready, yet has a remarkably light weight of just under 4 pounds minimum weight

Soulo

In addition to the new tent models, we’ve also added two new inner tent options to our modular Atlas. Both the new Inner Tent 8 and Inner Tent 6 have sewn in floors and sleep, respectively, 8 and 6 people. The Inner Tent 8 takes up the entire space of the Atlas outer, while the smaller footprint of Inner Tent 6 creates a roomy vestibule space.

Both the new models and the new Atlas options reflect our desire to build uniquely functional, strong yet lightweight backcountry tents. The Kaitum 3 is an expansive three person tent that is both very light and very strong, and ideal for longer or shorter trips. The fully free standing Allak and Soulo both offer completely integrated vestibules, excellent stability, and superb venting in remarkably lightweight packages. The Atlas inner tents extend the versatility of our large group tent, and makes it even more user-customizable.

All three of the new models, like all Hilleberg tents, are true all-season designs, with double wall construction, and linked inner and outer tents that allow for either simultaneous pitching or separate use. All three employ 9 mm DAC NSL Featherlite poles and outer tents made of Kerlon 1200, our ultralight ripstop nylon coated with a total of 3 layers of 100 percent silicone. While Kerlon 1200 is extremely light, it still has a minimum tear strength of 12 kg/26 lb, far stronger than most so-called “expedition grade” tent materials.

The Kaitum 3, Allak, and Soulo, as well as the new Atlas Inner Tent 8 and Inner Tent 6 will be available in mid- to late-January, 2008. The 2008 edition of our catalog, “The Tent Handbook” is available now. To order it, click here
