Low weight - and still stronger
In the hunt for light-weight gear, one is
easily enticed by simply the lightest possible, disregarding strength or
durability. This may cause safety problems! You can combine both
low weight with a
high degree of strength. This combination is not cheap since it requires
materials of the highest quality and clever solutions - but these attributes
define our ambition.
The concept of low weight is one of the
predominant drives in our industry. This is
advantageous; carrying a lighter load
allows for more fun when you are out in the hills. But
there are other aspects when choosing your gear: namely
longevity. Most often lighter gear does not last as long as
heavier gear.
Nobody wants equipment that is too heavy but many
lighter materials do not meet the demands one should have on good equipment. We
therefore do not compromise in our choice of materials. This can make it quite
difficult to find the right components for our products. Prior to production,
all materials are scrutinized for their qualities. We do this to make sure that
you can enjoy your outdoor pursuits, but also for your safety!
Strength and function
It is important that your gear lasts and works
well in poor conditions. We are always wishing for clear skies and sunny days, but
often this is not the case. Inadequate gear
works reasonably well on pleasant summer days but in
howling winds and driving snow it is strength and function upon which you
must rely.
We are taking poor weather conditions into
consideration when designing our tents: linked inner and outer tents, external
pole sleeves, adjustable pole tensioners and peg loops are details that help you
when the going gets tough.
A truly safe tent should not only be able to
withstand the rigours of bad weather but needs to excel in
ease of handling as well. Strong winds do not
wait until you have set up and secured your tent with all the pegs and lines!
It is our aim to offer tents that you can set up
all by yourself. This is the basis from where we start. It can be hard to pitch
a tent in a gale and it is therefore necessary to practice pitching your tent
before your departure.
By adapting the functions of our tents to the
worst imaginable circumstances we want to enable you to raise your tent in
strong winds with cold and darkness even when wearing gloves.
Once you have gained a certain routine in
handling your tent in rough conditions, using it in winter is not a major
obstacle any more. It will rather add a new, exciting dimension!
Double wall tents
Double walled tents offer greater comfort and
safety. Therefore, all Hilleberg tents consist of an outer and an
inner tent. These are linked to each other - but easily detachable - so that the
inner is raised simultaneously with the outer tent. The advantages are obvious:
-
No
loose inner tent to think about when pitching the tent.
- The inner tent is always protected from
the rain when making camp, and there is no flapping flysheet to wrestle into
place.
- Inner and outer tents can easily be
separated when the outer is wet or if you want to use either of the two
separately.
There
is naturally considerably less condensation in a double-walled tent and the
inner warms up faster - crucial for your comfort!
The
fabric of the inner tent also protects you from condensation droplets coming
from the inside of the outer tent when it is shaken by wind gusts and keeps you
from touching the potentially wet surface of the outer.
The
outer tent will seldom be completely free of condensation and moisture from the
ground and can potentially soak your equipment stored in the vestibule. Zippers and
vents can also not be absolutely waterproof. Therefore, it is wise to cover your
gear in the vestibule when it is raining heavily or on occasions when
there is a lot of
humidity in the air.
From a safety standpoint,
double-walled tents are superior. Should the outer tent
ever get ripped, you still have the protection of the inner tent. A single wall
tent would allow a storm to get right to you, with possibly serious
consequences!
This
construction also offers a high degree of flexibility and versatility: inner
and outer tents can be used and/or packed separately. The outer by itself makes
an excellent shelter for a lunch break on a day hike while the inner can be
used in balmier latitudes when protection from insects is the only
prerequisite. All you need are some separate pole holders.
Production
We at Hilleberg's manufacture – in contrast to most other brands – tents in our
own factory, in Estonia. Equipment and working conditions are according to
Swedish standard. Our permanent staff is trained to our high standards and they
are all competent tentmakers. Inner and outer tents are sewn completely by one
person who labels every tent with her name. Before the tents are dispatched
they are assembled, pitched and completed with lines and then undergo a final
inspection.
Product Development
It is our ambition to work to the highest standards, from being a just employer
to corresponding to the expectations that our customers have of our products.
In order to offer tents with the best possible performance in materials and
design, we need to be continually working with product development in
combination with field tests in the most shifting environments!
The response from our customers and their different needs are of vital
importance because every year we sell our tents to both normal hikers and
professional users who undertake demanding trips and have high expectations. We
go for multi-day outings into the Swedish mountains every month where we test
our equipment in all sorts of conditions, find solutions and get inspiration to
improve prototypes or existing models.
This is where our best ideas are taking shape.
Every detail or entirely new tents take months or even years of testing before
production. No design or solution is put into practice before it passes all the
tests. This goes above all for the materials we use. We continually search the
market for new developments and choose those that correspond to our criteria,
replace when necessary or preserve what is right.
