Windsack

Lightweight insurance against sudden inclement weather.

This simple, lightweight, uncommonly versatile portable shelter is a “don’t leave home without it” item for winter trips in Scandinavia. But since wilderness weather conditions can change instantly anywhere, carrying the Windsack is a good idea in any country! No matter if you’re walking, skiing or climbing in the mountains, the Windsack provides an excellent – and portable – chance to avoid the elements: simply deploy it from its stuff sack, and hunker down out of the wind to enjoy a meal or a rest break. You will be most comfortable if you either dig down into the snow or find a place that is already somewhat out of the wind.

More importantly, the Windsack is an emergency shelter. As a refuge from a sudden winter storm, its highly wind- and water repellent fabric keeps the weather out while providing a relative degree of comfort, and its bright red color is highly visible from a distance or from the air. The Windsack also works as a bivy bag for one to three people (although in heavy rain, it will provide less protection).

Both roomy and lightweight, the Windsack will accommodate up to three people. A zipper with four sliders make it possible to create either head “holes” or venting ports. The bottom hem has a draw cord which lets you cinch the Windsack around your feet, and a safety line prevents it from blowing away in strong winds while you’re climbing into or getting out of it. The top corners have pockets for skis or poles with which you can hold up the Windsack to transform it into a shelter cum windbreak.
